Large loops in adsorbed polymer layers

چکیده
We discuss the formation of large loops in adsorbed polymer layers when the bulk concentration C is large. This allows us to introduce a new characteristic length A that corresponds to the extension of the loops in the bulk. We find that A NC~/~ and increases from the screening length f to the radius of the chains when concentration increases. This

Non-equilibrium in adsorbed polymer layers
High molecular weight polymer solutions have a powerful tendency to deposit adsorbed layers when exposed to even mildly attractive surfaces. The equilibrium properties of these dense interfacial layers have been extensively studied theoretically. A large body of experimental evidence, however, indicates that non-equilibrium effects are dominant whenever monomer– surface sticking energies are so...

– We propose that several mechanisms contribute to friction in a polymer melt adsorbed at a structured surface. The first one is the well known disentanglement of bulk polymer chains from the surface layer. However, if the surface is ideal at the atomic scale, the adsorbed parts of polymer chains can move along the equipotential lines of the surface potential. This gives rise to a strong slippa...

The conformation of polymer layers adsorbed on solid surfaces is an important concern for applications such as steric stabilization1 and controlled bridging flocculation of colloidal particles.2,3 Usually, the conformations of adsorbed homopolymer chains are described as trains, loops, and tails and can be characterized by different measurables: the bound (train) fraction of segments, the layer...
متن کاملThe origin and characterization of conformational heterogeneity in adsorbed polymer layers
The equilibration of polymer conformations tends to be sluggish in polymer layers adsorbed onto highly attractive substrates, so the structure of these layers must be understood in terms of the layer growth process rather than equilibrium theory. Initially adsorbed chains adopt a highly flattened configuration while the chains which arrive later must adapt their configurations to the increasing...
متن کاملPerspective: kinetic and mechanical properties of adsorbed polymer layers.
One of the ironies of polymer science is that the intense interest in the dynamics of flexible and semiflexible macromolecules in the bulk [1–3] is not yet of major enough concern regarding polymer surfaces, the preoccupation being with equilibrated conformations. The current situation is summarized in an authoritative treatise [4] and epitomized by important recent papers [5]. Drawing inspirat...
